Welcome to the Atlassian Community!

For anything other than a really small install (up to 25 users and a few thousand issues at most), your backups should be done by:

  • Use the native database tools to get a backup of the database (mysqldump or pg_dump for example)
  • Taking a copy of the attachments directory in the Jira home/data directory
  • Take a copy of the Jira installation directory.  This is optional - restoring your installation is usually better done by installing a new Jira and then restoring the database and attachments directory, but restoring a copy of the install is quicker.
