Hi @Stanislav ,

Group assignment (and then further user assignment) is not a feature available in JIRA. (and imho is a big oversight).

A way we work around this is by using a custom group picker field (something like Assignee Group).

Procedural and by using transition screens we force a user to set this group when assigning an issue. Using the queue's you can then see what issues are assigned to your team/department/group and someone of that team can take action to assign the ticket to themselves or a teammate. (sadly you cannot filter the assignee based on that custom field)

Assigning roles to that field is not an easy thing, you could use workflow step properties to maybe limit who can edit the issue but I personally wouldn't be so restrictive.

This isn't possible by definition. https://jira.atlassian.com/browse/JRASERVER-1397

I would suggest 2 possible workarounds:

  1. Assign the ticket to the team / department leader. He/she should then assign it to whoever must conduct the task
  2. Create a custom dashboard for each department. Include a gadget that returns the issues where custom field "department" equals the department using this custom dashboard and that have no assignee yet. This gadget would be effectively a pool of unassigned tasks for anyone in the department.

You should try to follow this custom dashboard anyways because each department will surely need to have different information at their disposal.

I hope it helps :)
