My Jira DC to Cloud migration client is looking to replace their not-free Slack integration app for DC with either a native or free alternative in Cloud.
A native option is to create an incoming webhook in Slack and the create Automation Rules in Jira Cloud to send messages to Slack. However, within Slack itself where one would create the webhook it says that technology is old, may be removed at some future date, and Slack apps should be used instead.
I am looking at the Jira Cloud for Slack (Official) app. It says on the marketplace listing page:
"Get notified when issues get created, updated, transitioned, commented on, and more. Filter by issue type and priority so your team only sees what actually matters in your channel."
However, I'm having trouble finding the details of how to actually manage that.
Looking at the documentation linked in the marketplace listing:
https://support.atlassian.com/jira-work-management/docs/integrate-jira-cloud-and-slack/
...I find the statement:
"The 1.0 release of Jira Cloud for Slack allows you to easily set up detailed notifications for your Slack team by following simple instructions from @[deleted].”
But I'm not finding any more details than that. Is there any documentation that provides those details, or does one have to actually explore it in Slack directly?
The client does not necessarily want all updates to all issues to send messages to Slack, so I need an integration method that allows that to be controlled.
Also, if the webhooks option is being deprecated, how would one then continue to use Automation Rules to send messages to Slack?
I appreciate any insights anybody can offer.
Webhooks in Slack is still supported, but you have to create and app in order to do it. Slack has an example on how to do this in their documentation, Sending messages using Incoming Webhooks. I use this for sending Slack messages via automations.
Thank you for that information. I was not aware of that option.
I don't actually have admin access to a Slack environment to get hands on with how this works.
Do you happen to know if it is possible to go to the settings for the existing Jira Cloud Slack app and create a webhook? Or do we actually have to create our own app?
Do you have an answer to my original question about additional documentation for how to manage the notifications if the Atlassian "Jira Cloud for Slack" app is used?
If you don't have the answers that is fine. I can always reach out to Atlassian support to find out more about the existing app. I like to check in the community for answers first.

You have to create your own Slack app, but that is really simple and took me 5 minutes to do. Once you have the app created then you can create incoming webhooks that you can use in automations.
The configuration for the Jira Cloud Slack app is not visible, so there is no way of getting that. But I do know that it works different from the webhook one since it has interactions, slack commands, event subscriptions, and authentication.

Thanks, @Mikael Sandberg . That is very helpful information!

Thanks for raising this. I have the same question. As a workaround, I may try combining Jira's ability to send emails with Slack's feature to get an email address for a specific channel.
Not ideal by any means.

@Trudy Claspill - you should be able to achieve what you want with Actioner's Jira app:
https://marketplace.atlassian.com/apps/1230509/jira-for-slack-by-actioner?hosting=cloud&tab=overview
It comes with a quite generous free plan, too. Depending on your client's requirements and usage traffic, even the free plan may suffice.
Let me know if you need any help with this app.
Cheers,
Emel @ Actioner
