How to query backlog tasks in team-managed kanban project

What is the JQL I can use to identify what tasks are in the Backlog?  Solutions I found online say to use the Sprint field but this is a kanban project and the Sprint field is empty for all tasks. Thanks.

Currently there is no support natively (nor in a third party app, to my knowledge) to allow you to use JQL to filter team managed projects to identify issues that are on the Board vs. in the Backlog. Here is the change request for that:
