How to create Jira ticket from slack without filling a form?

Denis Gorbunov April 13, 2021

Slack has a feature to create a Workflow that uses steps such as create form or message.

We set up a workflow in a such way when user fills a form and then submits it. On the last step we send a message to the same room where workflow was executed with the following syntax:

/jira create bug [description]

However, nothing happens. It doesn't create a ticket in jira. Even Slack room connected to correct Jira Project.

You have to manually type /jira create -> click Enter and fill a form to create an issue

There are a lot of 3rd party apps that can do it which we don't want to utilize at this moment.

So, is there a way to submit jira ticket avoiding filling a form manually?

Hi @Denis Gorbunov

Thank you for your very interesting question! With the official Jira Cloud <> Slack app today you won't be able to create an issue without entering the modal form today.

It sounds like in the last step of your workflow, you'd like an issue to be automatically created in Jira with information filled out in the previous step of the Slack Workflow, so you are sending a /jira create message as a workaround - is that correct? Do you think a more official "Create Jira issue" workflow step could be helpful in your situation? What other things solutions have you evaluated?

I can also recommend trying "Halp," a conversational ticketing product recently acquired by Atlassian where users can create tickets from Slack without filling out additional forms that are automatically sync'd with Jira: https://halp.com/halp-integrations/jira-integration

@David Michelson

Thanks for quick response!

We are trying to set up internal Engineering Jira Service Desk now and as temporary solution without any additional software purchase we liked Slack Workflow that can summarize user request. We looked into Halp and eventually will use it.

It looks like we potentially want users switch to "Create Jira issue" workflow step. However, even we do it users can still pick a project and assignee (we don't want them to do it). We want only users be able to set Priority and Description. We also thought that when you connect Slack room to a specific Jira project you can't allow them to see other projects.

Hi @Denis Gorbunov ,

we have developed Replio, a Jira chatbot that can be integrated in Slack and Teams and that allows you to perform actions in Jira without having to open Jira. If you want to give it a try, you can find it here. It's free. We'd love to receive your feedback!

Interesting! We will spike this out.

Hi @Denis Gorbunov!

Sorry if I'm a bit late.

I'm working at Adaptavist (we develop ScriptRunner for Jira) and we've just released an app to add Jira steps to the workflow builder (create Jira issue, update Jira issue…).

It handles multiple Jira instances, it's compatible with Jira Server and DC and support for Cloud is coming up in a couple of weeks only, and the app's free.

It lets you create and update Jira issues from a Slack form, or even directly from a Slack message with an emoji reaction thanks to the workflow builder (it scrapes Slack message content)

https://www.adaptavist.com/products/slack-apps/workflow-steps-for-jira#cloud_notification

It's not available for Jira Cloud just yet but we'll make it available very very soon.

Thanks @Thomas Boudier [Adaptavist] ! We will look into this as soon as Cloud version will be released.
