I've been going through the issue layout and trying to make Epic and Project links appear in the context fields, however this is not an option. See image.

It doesn't seem like I can even create a field that links a Jira Issue......

how do I get my issue layout to appear like this?:

Hello @Mia Quinlan-Pretto

Welcome to the Atlassian community.

In a Team Managed project the field "Epic Link" is not used, so you will not be able to add it to the screen.

You can see the parent Epic of a an issue in the bread crumbs at the top of the issue details.

What problem are you trying to solve by having the parent epic information displayed in a second location?

From the image you showed that you want to emulate, I don't know what the Projects field is that they are using at location 1. The project to which the viewed issue belongs is actually displayed in location 2, as part of the bread crumbs. You can see that it is not the same value, so the value at location 1 is some other custom Projects field that has been added to the issue.

thanks for the reply @Trudy Claspill !

My end goal is to have the epic link appear in the ''Create Issue" window. Screenshot 2023-10-16 111625.png

Currently all issues created like this will have no issue linked unless you click on the individual ticket: Screenshot 2023-10-16 112357.png

Adding this as a field in the issue layout however, doesn't seem like an option. I'd also like the issue project to appear in the context field. (I didn't realise they had linked a different project in that screenshot! I am just looking to display the issue's project within the context field along with the epic link).

Hello @Mia Quinlan-Pretto

It is currently not possible to add to the Create Issue screen for a Team Managed project an input field for setting the parent Epic for an issue. You can link an issue to an Epic after it has been created with the breadcrumb link, as you noted.

Alternately, from the Epic itself you can use the Add a child issue button.

Screenshot 2023-10-16 at 3.05.57 PM.png

This lets you add the child issue "in line", filling in just the Summary for the child issue.

After filling in the Summary, if there are other required fields then the Create Issue dialog will open for completing the child issue creation. If there are no other required fields, then the Create Issue dialog does not open, and you have to navigate to the new child issue and edit the remaining fields.

According to an April 2023 comment from an Atlassian Team member on this post the ability to add the Epic during child issue creation is something that was planned to be added in Q4 2023.

Regarding adding a field in the Context Field section to show the issue's project or the parent Epic, neither of those is an option at this time for Team Managed projects.

But I have to ask again why having the information shown in the breadcrumbs at the top of the issue is not adequate.

If you must have that information in the Context fields area also, you will need to implement a workaround. You could create custom fields to display in that area and use Automation Rules to populate them with the information for display purposes only.
