How can I trigger a manual rule through a comment hyperlink?

Flavio De Souza February 15, 2024

Many of our users do not notice the "Actions" call-to-action (CTA) buttons, so I want to create an automation asking them via comment if they would like to receive our support in reviewing their tickets.

The comment will have two potential answers: yes and no. Clicking on yes, which would have the manual rule link embedded, would trigger it to display the defined prompt questions.

So, is there any way that I can copy the hyperlink of the manual rule?

Regards,
Flavio

Hi @Flavio De Souza

I suspect the answer is "no".  The manually triggered automation rules appear to be started by Jira code, not a URL.

Perhaps consider what problem the manually triggered rule was trying to solve, why it is believed a link in a comment would be more likely to help, and then evaluate if changes to issue fields could be used to trigger alternative rules.  These could not prompt for user input, as do manually triggered rules, but that may not be necessary after the analysis is considered.

Kind regards,
Bill

Hi @Bill Sheboy

Thank you for your prompt reply. Much appreciated.

Our main objective is to prompt users with more questions once they accept the support offer. However, using screens during transitions is not a viable option for us because our statuses often transition automatically due to synchronization with our external experimentation tool. As a result, our users do not need to be logged in to JIRA at that moment.

Thus, when searching for alternatives, I thought that adding a manual trigger (via URL) to a comment automation that prompts users to take action would make it easier for our users. Bear in mind that the idea with the prompt is to evaluate the customers' answers to determine the appropriate action(s) for their issues.

Do you have any alternative suggestions for ways to prompt users with questions without using screens during the transition?

Thank you again.

Flavio

I have not tried any of these...

Investigate using Jira Service Management, as it has forms features specifically to do what you ask.

I suspect there are marketplace application specifically to fill this need, so check for those.

The comment which mentions them could include a link to the issue, and ask to select the link to the issue and add a comment back with their answers, and then the rule could attempt to parse the responses.  This approach seems quite brittle to me.
