How can I automate Initiative Status update when "child issue" (epic) status is updated

I'm in an initiative only project. I'd like the initiative status to be transitioned to in progress when a "child issue" or linked epic is transitioned to in progress.

Does this automation have to be implemented at the Epic project level? (when issue is updated, update parent status) similar to this rule

Seems possible from the initiative level but I'm having trouble with the trigger. Maybe a jql trigger. I dont know. Please and thank you!

Hi @Aaron Rose

For a question like this, I recommend posting an image of the complete rule, images of the relevant actions / conditions /branches, and of the audit log details showing the rule execution.  Those will provide context for the community to offer suggestions.

Until we see those...

You describe having a Jira project with only Initiatives and one (or more) other projects with epics.  And, you want the Initiatives to transition status when child or linked epics transition.

Your rule trigger would be issue transitioned, with conditions to check the issue type is an epic and there is a parent (or linked) initiative.  As the rule(s) would be updating issues in another project, these would need to be global, or multi-project, in scope.

Kind regards,
Bill

Thank you Bill. We figured out how to update parent based on a linked issue, or child status change but you're correct that multi-project permissions are required. Coordinating that now.
