Difference between application links and project links and benefits

Hello,

Im trying to determine the benefit of project links.  I do have our JSM instance linked to Confluence for search KB but then noticed an option for project link.  

What would be the benefit of a project link?  Also it seems the project links are not project specific but more global to your instance.

A project link tells you where there are docs or resources associated with the project, not a lot else. 

Application links enable several integration functions between services, but they're global, not at a project level.
