I have an existing sub task. I want to bring it into a story alongside the other sub tasks I've created there, but when I use the "link" method, I have to choose from the drop-down with things like "approved" or "related to" - when I choose any of these, it adds the sub-task in a box further down, entitled "approved" or "related to", but I want the sub-task to appear in the top section where the brand new sub-tasks go.
Can anyone help please?
Hello @Tania Bigg Welcome.
If its cloud, you directly edit it on right hand side, please see screen shot below:
If its data center, instead of link, you choose Move ..Please see screenshot below:
@Tania Bigg the important thing to consider is that, while sub-tasks and their parents are linked, it's a very specific kind of link that Jira handles on the back-end. It's not the same kind of issue link that you're creating, which is just a way of showing a non-hierarchical relationship between two issues.
As Kalyan pointed out, you want the linked issue to be a parent of the sub-task, so you don't create an issue link between the two, but set the parent of the sub-task to the appropriate issue.

Thank you both so much. I should have clarified that the sub-tasks had been cloned from sub-tasks in another story and were therefore sitting in that story so when I tried to make the new story the parent, I was not able to. Thanks to your advice, I was able to work this out and did "three dots / move" on each sub-task which worked perfectly.
