Auto-update start date & end date of a parent issue

Adil Bulsara _ADIL_ March 30, 2023

Hi Atlassian Team,

Pls help me with below questions. :-)

1 )   We would like the start date & end date of a parent issue (EPIC, Story, Task) to be auto-updated based on the start dates & end dates of the child issues (Story, Task, Sub-Tasks).

---> What options do we have other than automation ?  Pls explain steps to be followed for this to work.

---> Is Automation the only option ?   Pls explain steps to be followed for this to work.

2)   Can the solution chosen in above question, be implemented in a JIRA Project Template, so that all projects created using this template don't have to worry about the calculation of the start date & end date of a parent issue at all.

3) Does the administrator have any extra privilege's w.r.t. automation.

4) Does the administrator have any extra privilege's to implement the solution chosen in Question 1.

Looking forward to hear from you.

Thanks,

Adil.

Hi @Adil Bulsara _ADIL_

1) Refer to this video that shows you how you can write information to the child tickets and vice-versa: https://youtu.be/DcPYrw-Puus

Automation is the recommended option in your use case.

2) You can make the automation global and assign it to all projects.  Or you can only have it for select projects.  For the global automation rule you need to be a sys admin. If it's only for the project within, project admins can do it.  Also, shared Project templates do not copy the automations.

3) Yes, sys admin can do global automations

4) see above.

Hi Fabian,

Thanks a lot for all the info.

Could you also share an example of how automation can be done for

1) ALL Projects

2) A Selected List of Projects

Looking forward to hear from you.

THX :-)

Adil,

Did you successfully build the automation you outlined above? If so, do you mind sharing your steps/outline of the automation you built? Thanks.

Jeff
