How can I format an Asset customfield as a smart value for Customer notification email?

I'm attempting to edit the 'Approval Required' email notification under my projects customer notifications settings.

I want to add two Asset custom fields as smart values to the email template so that when the Approver is notified the values of the asset custom fields are shown in the email body.

Here's a screenshot of my email template:

The standard smart values ${recipient.name} and ${issue.reporter.name} are working correctly, but the Software and License Assignee fields are not.

I thought perhaps because asset fields are similar to select fields that I needed to add '.value' to the end of my smart values but that hasn't helped.

I've tried other solutions like this one here but without luck. All solutions and documentation I have found so far have been triggering emails from a Jira automation so I suspect this requires a different solution.

Any suggestions here would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

I think I've answered my own question.

Customer notification emails use Variables, not smart values. The allowed variables are restricted to this list:

Just another option for your consideration - you can include Assets fields into your email notifications using our app Raley Emails Notifications.

It allows you to include any attribute of a referenced Asset field, and this is how you can approach it https://wiki.raleyapps.com/display/RAL/Display+values+from+Assets+objects
