Now in GA: Selective Data Copy for JSM Sandboxes!

Hello Atlassian Community,

We're excited to announce that Selective Data Copy for Jira Service Management sandboxes is now generally available! This feature will be available for Jira Service Management Premium or Enterprise plan customers.

What is a sandbox?

Sandboxes are isolated environments that mirror production environments, allowing users to safely test and experiment with new features and system changes without impacting the live environment. By providing a space for testing and training, sandboxes enable secure change management, reduce operational risks, and facilitate innovation, which is crucial for maintaining stability and efficiency on production sites.

What problem does Selective Data Copy solve?

Previously, creating a sandbox meant replicating all of the product data from your production site in your sandbox, which increased the time it took to create a sandbox and was, in many cases, unnecessary. We know you often only need a subset of your production data to test a change.

This is where Selective Data Copy proves valuable. With this feature, Admins can selectively copy specific spaces or projects from their production environment to their sandbox. By only copying over a subset of data, the sandbox configuration process becomes faster, allowing you to test new features and workflows sooner! With this release, Selective Data Copy is now supported for Jira, Jira Service Management, and Confluence.

How can I access this feature?

To copy specific spaces or projects from your production to its sandbox:

  1. Go to admin.atlassian.com and select your organisation if you have more than one.
  2. Select Products > Sandbox.
  3. Under Actions in the product table, select Copy production data.
  4. Follow the steps to select Specific projects or Specific spaces.
  5. If you want to see attachments in your sandbox, select Include attachments. Depending on whether you are using centralised or original user management, your experience of granting users and groups access to the sandbox will differ. For more details on how to determine which experience you are having, see our support documentation.
  6. Depending on whether your organisation is on original user management, select if you want to Preserve group memberships in your sandbox.
  7. Run the Validation.
  8. Review the data to be copied.
  9. Select Copy data.
