User can't create issue because doesn't have 'Manage Sprint' permission

I am trying to restrict a group to only being able to create and edit issues, so they have this in the permission scheme. But when one of them tries to create an issue, Jira throws the error "user <user name> doesn't have the 'Manage Sprint' permission".

This is something subtle that I can't figure out. Having sprint management permission shouldn't have anything to do with creating an issue. The Sprint field is in my issue creation screen but not required. I even tried removing it and got the same error for that user.

Any insight would be appreciated!

Support from Atlassian helped me find the problem.

It was a condition on the issue create transition in the project workflow left over from another project that only let users with sprint manage permission create issues. I removed that condition and all is well now.
