what is the primary difference between technical story and story and a task and can a tech story be dependent on the user story ( so if the tech story is marked complete would it help complete some portion of the dependent user story )

We use the following definitions:

  • A story is something that brings value to our customer (internal or external)
  • A task is something that has to be done, not per se technical

You could create a user story or task, and create a sub-task that relates to a technical issue that has to be completed in order for the story to be done.

Jira will automatically ask you if you want to complete the parent story or task, when all sub-tasks are completed.

Hope this helps, since there isn't a single solution in my book.
