JIRA sending duplicate (11) email notifications

Elliott Lock May 15, 2016

Hi,

A co-worker has commented on a task and I've received 11 identical emails referencing that one comment. Why could this be happening?

11 is a lot for a simple configuration error. There could be multiple factors in play. This could be due to any combination of the following:

  • Duplicated SMTP settings in Outgoing email. AKA, 2 emails are sent for the same event.
  • The notification scheme has more than one way to notify the same user. It must notify the user himself, then a group that the user belongs to, then a "fake" user linked to a mailing list to which the user belongs etc. You should look at this
  • Mail server problems on the IT side.
  • Mail forwards by other users who have been notified.

Are you to only user experiencing this issue? Is this a one-time thing, or does it occur all the time? Is it always 11 emails, or does the number vary? By how much? Are all the emails from the same sender?

Answering these questions will probably help you figure out what's wrong.

In any case, there's probably email server stuff that's not configured properly. It would take a very malicious admin to set up JIRA notifications to send 11 emails for the same event.
