Does marking issue as duplicate raises the severity automatically

Varun November 5, 2020

If a 'Sev 1' is identified as duplicate of another issue with a lower severity, will marking the issue as duplicate raise the severity of that other issue, like it is handled in Bugzilla.

Sorry if this is an elementary question but we recently moved from Bugzilla to Jira and are trying to find our ways around :)

No.  Jira does not have a severity field natively (the misuse the severity field sees in Bugzilla is actually one of the reasons Jira was written - to get rid of it), and even if you add one as a custom field, it has no way of knowing that you might want to do strange things like that.

Linking an issue to another has no effect on the other issue beyond adding the link.

If you want to set something like that up, you will need to use automation or one of the scripting tools to do it.  Something that can listen for the links and perform the logic and then amendments you want.

Hi  @Varun  ,

By marking as duplicate, do you mean linking the issue as duplicate to the current issue?

No, it doesnt automatically update the severity or any other fields of the ticket.

Only the link will be updated
