Cannot change the project lead

In any projects, I cannot change the project lead. I can type usernames into the field but the auto-complete/auto-suggest box never populates.

Even if I save the details with the username in the box, when the page refreshes it has reverted to the original lead.

I am a global admin in our Jira instance and have given myself explicit administrator access to some projects, but it still doesn't work.

Ideas?

Could you please confirm that you have Project Administrator access to the projects you want to change?
