Are Epics only for Scrum Projects?

I have a Jira project that is not scrum but a basic bug tracker.  It's letting me create an epic and link issues to it but when I go to the epic report it says there are currently no epics on the board.  I'm new to Jira and not sure if I created the epic correctly. 

The epic is part of the project I want and all the linked issues are also part of the same project.

Yes you can use it for kanban board.  Enable the backlog by setting a status to the backlog box in the column configuration of the board and then an option will be provided to enable an epic panel in the backlog view.

This isnt required to use epics but will make it a little easier to manage them.
