Configure a smart part number

I have 10 custom fields, each with a number of options. Each option corresponds to a letter in a smart part number. If I select the color Red in a custom field I need the 5th digit to change to "B". If I select "4 door" I need the 6 digit to change to "D".

I created an automation:

When: Issue Updated

Branch: For Current Issue

Then: Edit Issue Fields.

I'm new to the advanced options, and not really sure where to go next.

Hi @Janel Bland -- Welcome to the Atlassian Community!

I recommend starting with this how-to article to find the exact smart values for your fields.  Smart values are name, spacing, and case-sensitive, so confirming can head off problems.  https://support.atlassian.com/cloud-automation/docs/jira-smart-values-issues/

Next, please look here for information on accessing the fields in an issue: https://support.atlassian.com/cloud-automation/docs/jira-smart-values-issues/

When initially creating your rule, I recommend writing the values you need to the audit log with the Log Action, rather than doing the Issue Edit.  Once you have everything working start making the Issue Edits and test further.

If you get stuck creating your rule, please post images of your rule, showing all of the actions' details, and of the audit log details showing the rule's execution.  That may provide context for the community to offer suggestions.  Thanks!

Kind regards,
Bill
