Issue Type Hierarchy for Team-managed projects to show new issue type in Timeline

Hanna Karlsson June 11, 2024

We got a team-managed project setup, where we are keen to use the Timeline view. However, we want to show our added issue type (initiative) instead of epics.

The help guide seem to say that Epics are default, but you can change the Parent (and possibly through that way display another issue type than Epic in Timeline view).

I don't however seem to find where I can change issue type hierarchy in this project.

And if I am able to find and change the hierarchy, does anyone know if it actually will work?  ðŸ¤”

Thank you so much both!!

And what a brilliant solution, had no idea you could rename the standard issue types but that will work a treat.

Thanks again!

Hello @Hanna Karlsson

You can find all informations about issue type and custom issue type via this link https://support.atlassian.com/jira-software-cloud/docs/set-up-issue-types-in-team-managed-projects/

According to this page

Currently, you can only create custom "standard" issue types. You can't create custom "parent" or "subtask" issue types.

For me you can't change the hierachy of issue type on Team managed project . Epic still the higest level -> custome type -> sub task

Adding to this...

You said you wanted to display you Initiative issue type instead of Epics. Does that mean you don't intend to use the Epic issue type?

If that is the case you could rename the Epic issue type as "Initiative". The issue type would be treated like the original Epic issue type, as a parent to the standard level issue types.

If you want an additional hierarchy level above the Team Manged project Epic, you can use another issue type from a Company Managed project as the parent of the TM Epic. The release of this functionality is described here.
