Parenting a team-managed epic with a company-managed initiative is now possible

Parenting a team-managed epic with a company-managed initiative is now possible in Jira Plans, available on Premium and Enterprise subscriptions.

Scaling agile with Jira Software may mean you have a mix of company and team-managed projects running at any one time.

To help you better integrate work across project types, you can now assign a company-managed initiative as a parent to a team-managed epic. Configuring a hierarchy level above epic is only possible in Premium or Enterprise editions.

This could apply to scenarios where an autonomous team needs to work in a unique way while contributing to and reporting on progress towards a common initiative from another project.

There are two ways to re-parent a team-managed epic to a company-managed initiative:

  • Simply drag and drop your epics in the timeline view of your plan as you would in any company-managed project

  • Re-parent the issues in your backlog / issue view

Read about linking an issue to a parent in advanced roadmaps.
Try Jira Software Premium to access the issue hierarchy above the epic level.

Hi Irene,

Perhaps changes to the product since your article has been the source of why I am having a hard time understanding how to implement this.

Just to be clear an Issue Type Hierarchy across the entire Jira instance and all Company Managed projects have been setup where Initiative is located above Epic as Level 2, to be able to get the correct parent structure in my plan?

Which means all (company) projects has a hierarchy:

  • Initiative
  • Epic
  • Standard issue types
  • Sub-task issue types

If that is the case, then there is no need for two different projects (Team Managed and Company Managed) as I could get the full hierarchy in one Company Managed project - of course there might be other reasons for having a Team managed projects besides the need for a custom hierarchy).

I would you are able to elaborate if changes in Jira has made the difference since March 20, 2024 or if I misunderstood something in the explanation.

Cheers, Malene
