we have many customers and are running sprints for those customers using our instance of Jira.

We have a customer who is leaving and we need to export all of their history to a new instance of Jira that they will create (over a year of work, dozens of sprints, several thousand stories, most of them complete, several hundred in backlog.)

Is there a way to do this:

a) easily

b) seamlessly

c) no loss of any of the detail (associated epics, story points, attached documents, etc.)

Short answer is "no", there's nothing I'd call "easy" about this.  But it's not horribly hard either.  I would:

  • Clone the instance, so that I've got a temporary development instance
  • Delete all the projects that do not belong to your customer
  • (Think about a bit of SQL to remove data from the "projects" and "moved_issues" tables)
  • Either
    • Hand over the instance to them whole
    • Export it as xml, and zip up the attachments
    • Give them a database dump, and zip up the attachments
