struggling to assign Epics to Tasks

I've read a lot about configuring JIRA view/edit issue screens.

i can add EPIC to the view/edit issue screen but it just doesn't show up. Sometimes it does...but often not. What is preventing it from showing up even though i ask for it in the view? See attached screens.

Could you check the issue type on the issues where it appears and where it does not?

My first guess is that the field is not appearing on sub-task types, but does appear on issue-level types.
