service desk external login and rest or servicedesk api

Does single sign on aka https://<site url>/plugins/servlet/external-login work with rest/api/latest  or service desk api, removing the need for basic authentication in an api request (PUT or POST)? if not any ideas about authentication for a windows desktop application making web requests to the jira server.  thanks
