"Smart Links" negatively impacting workflow

Milo Tuck September 8, 2021

Hi,

With the implementation of smartlinks, myself and the team would like the option to set a default "inline" or "URL" instead of being forced to use smartlinks. The only solution being that of a workaround to not use smartlinks.

We need URLs specifically as we work with links a lot, and stakeholders need to see the full URL before clicking on it. Not only is this slowing the work flow, its also a security risk which we do not approve of.

Please give us the option to at least set a default. Simply put, its a security risk we are not happy with.

Thank you,

Milo

Hi @Angélica Luz

Would it be possible to get a status update on this? I know a lot of people are asking for this from the main ticket and I feel like I've been left hanging with your previous comment.

Thanks,

Milo

Hello Milo,

The last update was posted on August 4 and I searched internally and there is nothing new to share.

The updates are posted directly in the description by a product manager.

Hi all!

A quick update from the Jira issue and Smart Links teams.

Firstly, thanks for your ongoing, candid feedback. Please rest assured that we are closely monitoring your feedback and discussing internally.

I understand this issue is increasingly causing challenges for our users. I'm currently working with our Smart Links team to explore this problem space to better understand nearer term improvements.

I'll continue to update this ticket as I have more to share.

Cheers,

Hello @Milo Tuck,

Welcome to the Atlassian Community!

When it comes to smart links, currently, it’s not possible to select a default format for the links added to the description or comments.

There is a feature request suggesting the ability to disable this option:

Please, vote and also watch the feature above to receive updates from our product managers. The updates are posted in the description.

I added the link to this question and also your comment as an internal note, but feel free to add a new comment since our product managers are always reviewing the feedback on the features.

For now, the workaround is to use CTRL + Z or Cmd + Z to revert the smart link to the URL.

Kind regards,
Angélica

Thank you for answering. However I am already well aware of "Option to Disable Smart Links For Non-Atlassian Products in ADF editor"

Myself and all my team have voted/watched the ticket for over a month now and there has been 0 relevant updates.

The reason I took it here is because we are not finding this to be a feature, but moreover a defect within your system.

The workaround which is being offered is *only* suitable when you are pasting links without any more plain text around the comment. This is rarely the case within my team, or as I imagine, anyone else's for that matter.

Again, I would not have made this ticket if it wasn't for the lack of any relevant updates on the above ticket. By raising it this way, I am trying to tell Atlassian that this "feature" which has been brought in is not only a security nightmare but also add extra steps when not needed (why should we have to use a workaround for your product(s))? and therefor its more a defect/bug than a feature.

By the very nature of not being set a default, I would define this as a bug.

We really are at our wits end with this and need it sorted (or SOME SORT OF MOVEMENT) within the next few weeks, and we need a real fix, not a CTRL + Z fix.

Its gotten to a point where I start the comment on Jira, tag the relevant parties, then type the comment on notepad with my comments/links then quickly paste it into the comment field before Jira picks up that these links are "smart". This is not a good way to use your service, its adding buckets of time to each comment, let alone each ticket.
