is there a way to have subtasks appear in boards

We want to be able to plan using tasks and subtasks because we want to report time to client based on tasks originally created but to manage work based on subtasks when we break out smaller work packages. Subtasks aren't appearing in boards. How do we enable that? I'm not sure if we are using JIRA Cloud or JIRA Software.

From "plan", I assume you mean you want to see subtasks on the backlog?

They're deliberately hidden from the backlog because they are of no use in planning - you can't rank them outside the parent issue, so there's not a lot of use for them.
