how do automatic database backups work with native database backups

We are moving from the HSQLDB of our existing JIRA instance to oracle.  We have a database backup that runs once a day, using the automatic database backup in the System Admin configuration.  Will that still work when we move to Oracle? is it something that works regardless of underlying database software?  It seems it should be, but I'm just becoming familiar with JIRA and do not want to create more problems than I solve.
