Hello @Ramesh Krishnan

In Jira Cloud, you cannot directly move a story from an active sprint to a previously closed sprint using the standard Sprint field dropdown, because closed sprints do not appear as selectable options in the UI. However, there are two main workarounds:

Option 1: Reopen the Closed Sprint

  • Go to Reports > Sprint Report on your board.

  • Select the closed sprint (e.g., 5.0) and reopen it.

  • Move the story from Sprint 5.1 back to Sprint 5.0 in the backlog view.

  • Close the sprint again once the move is complete.

This allows you to assign issues to a sprint that was previously closed, but requires temporarily reopening it.

Option 2: Bulk Edit Using Sprint ID

  • Use Jira’s Bulk Change feature:

    • Search for your story in the issue navigator.

    • Select the issue(s), then choose Bulk Change > Edit Issues.

    • In the Change Sprint field, enter the Sprint ID of the closed sprint (you can find the Sprint ID by inspecting the Sprint Report or using browser developer tools).

    • Complete the bulk update.

This method lets you assign issues to a closed sprint without reopening it, but you need the numeric Sprint ID (not the name). https://confluence.atlassian.com/jirakb/jira-software-how-to-search-for-a-sprint-using-jql-779159065.html

Do note that both methods will record the sprint change in the issue history, and this cannot be removed and this process is only available to users with the necessary project permissions.

Hi @Ramesh Krishnan

Welcome to the community!

No, Jira does not allow direct editing of a closed sprint's datesHowever, you can reopen a closed sprint, make necessary changes, and then close it again to effectively update the sprint end date to reflect the actual completion date.
