can we automate a back up to Jira Cloud? or can Atlassian restore from their back ups?

We have recently added Big Picture and a few people have accidentally deleted Jira tickets in Jira from Big Picture.  This is worrying us a bit!  We basically would like to know that we can restore from a backlog should someone be a little over zealous with the delete key.  Atlassian do back ups daily I believe - can they restore from these?  if not then is there a way to automate daily or weekly backups?  can you just restore a single project?

Hi @Elaine Cawthorne ,

Atlassian themselves don't offer a restore of your specific instance. They do perform daily backups of the entire system but the storage solution holds multiple instances and restoring that would also restore the other instances on that backup.

Hence you need to rely on your own backup of the system. This can be done manually or there are some scripted work arounds to backup as well.

Recently also an app was announced that can handle this for you (I believe this one https://marketplace.atlassian.com/apps/1226389/rewind-backups?tab=overview&hosting=cloud) while Atlassian works on a native solution for it.

Hi @Elaine Cawthorne @Dirk Ronsmans @Paul Wiggers,

Here are a couple of things I have learnt over the past year as we been trying to address this problem.

1. As @Paul Wiggers, points out you can backup Jira cloud data using the database / xml backup mechanism that Atlassian provides. From what I have seen this works if the dataset size is small for both backup & restore. Reference the cloud import

2. When you restore a Settings > System > Import Jira Cloud to see the restrictions associated with database / xml backup

3. When you restore things back through a database backup (assuming it worked) you get all or nothing meaning if you did a backup on Oct 1st and you are trying to restore that data back on Oct 12th, you will loose all the changes etc.. in between. Of course you can restore to a sandbox and then try extracting the specific set of issues which you want and then you would have to re-import that back

4. As @Dirk Ronsmans there are a couple of vendors now including Revyz which offers backup & restore based on Restful API's you could look for  https://marketplace.atlassian.com/search?query=backup to see all the vendors offering - backup as a service

5. None of us solve all the use cases that are out there from a disaster recovery perspective because of the lack of API's at this point in time, but I believe the most frequently occurring deletion use case are well addressed.

Having said that what I can tell you is that we are working very closely with the Atlassian team to enhance the API's to address all the disaster recovery use cases that we see.

I would love to collaborate with all of you on the use cases we are working with Atlassian on with regards to Disaster Recovery and Bring Your Own Key (BYOK).

It is possible to create a backup for cloud trough Settings > System > Backup manager.

However, this is only for backing up and restoring the complete project / environment and not for single tickets.

Atlassian warns that deleting a ticket is irrevocable and should be done with care. Perhaps you are better off taking a look at the permissions and try to remove the delete permission for either the user or the application.
