i got this on jira GUI when downloading the later version

 Required - current version is incompatible with Jira Core 8.12.0

It can, but see https://confluence.atlassian.com/adminjiraserver/upgrading-jira-applications-938846936.html for how to do it - you won't be using the GUI to do it.

Hi @hmora 

I just had a roll through release and upgrade notes and I suspect, since the 8.12 release is so new that there is an app or something that hasn't been flagged as compatible with 8.12

I wouldn't say you couldn't upgrade but I have typically given a release a week or so to marinate before I attempt one. If this is a production instance with some complexity, I would be more tempted to go to the latest LTS release that you are in and wait for the next LTS for new features.
