Workflow preconditon question

Dear All,

our users need a feature in their workflow: there are 1 status called Clarification which can be transitioned from several statues (e.g. Open, In progress, etc.) and vice versa. They would like to achieve a condition which enables as the back transition only that one which was the root status.

I mean: if the user transitioned the issue from Open to Clarification, then you can choose only the Open status from the Clarification. If you come to Clarification from in progress then if you finished with clarification you could only choose In progress.

So I would like to limit the workflow transitions according to the incoming status.

How can it be solved? I know that we could create several clarification statuses like "Clarification", "Clarification.", "Clarification2", etc. but it must be a better solution.

Any idea?
