Will filters, workflows, etc. created by a de-activated or removed user still work?

If a site admin leaves the business and their Jira / Confluence access is disabled or that user is removed, what happens to all the projects they have set up (saved filters used for subscriptions or used on Confluence pages, permission schemes, screen and field configs, workflows, etc.) - will they all still work?

There are only two things you'll notice if you de-activate a user:

  • The de-activated user will not be able to log in
  • The de-activated user will no longer appear in most user selection fields as an option when creating/editing/assigning/etc.  (They will remain in place when they're already selected in the fields, and searchable, they just become un-selectable when creating or updating)

Removing a user will cause you problems:

  • Issues where they are the reporter, assignee or have commented will start showing useless data and may demand you select other users before you can transition or edit them
  • Filters may start to become unusable and need correcting (not just the ones they owned)
  • Restricted pages will need to be stripped of their restrictions so they can be re-created without the removed user

There's a whole host of "interesting" things you'll run into if you delete a user.  We strongly recommend that you never do it (unless they are someone created in error or someone who has never logged in)
