Why would previous team members show up in current sprint?

I have had 3 team members who have not be apart of the project for over a year show up as a colored circle with their initials in my current sprint .  There are no tickets assigned to them anywhere on the board and their access was cut when they left the company. 
What steps can I take to remove them completely?

In Jira Cloud, it's not uncommon for old users to appear in boards, sprints, or filters even after their access is revoked.

Unfortunately, there is no option/setting to edit the list of users seen in those colored circles. The names appear in that section based on past usage, assignees, mentions in comments/fields/lists, etc. They will eventually be removed as other new users interact with the project more frequently.
