Why there's not a checklist component available by default?

Why there's not a checklist component (like in Trello where the checklist is very nice to use) available by default?

By the time enough of Atlassian's customers decided they wanted one (most still do not - checkbox custom fields and/or sub-tasks are more useful for most), there were already some third-party apps available that could provide them.

So Atlassian went and did other things, rather than implement something that would kill off a vendor (although you might want to take a look at the forms now available in Cloud)

Got the same question from some of my users.

We have a workaround by adding Default Text to the description field to help people a little bit.

It's not your typical checklist but it helps.

You can find the documentation for it here.

This also works in cloud.
