Why isn't dashboard gadget column sorting

The image I included is from a dashboard which is using the "Filter Results" gadget. From what I've read, selecting a column of data from the gadget should sort that column. I have sorted the Target start column in DESC order (can see that by the down arrow appearing to the right of the column label). But the dates are not appearing in any chronological order. Also, if I select the column again to sort in ascending order, there is no change in the order. It stays the same. What could be preventing the dates from being sorted?
