Why is bolding on bracketed test in a test step unbolded upon hitting enter?

We currently utilize square brackets around bolded text to identify the labeled UI buttons in our test steps and in migrating those to XRay we found that bolding the brackets and text is unbolded upon hitting enter to go to the next line. I assume this is due to some programming feature that utilizes square brackets?
