Why is Jira so bad at issues? I can't find a way to just close the issue, or select as duplicate.

I was working on an issue today, there was an error on the code, but since the error was written as [object Object] I opened an issue, but I couldn't find a way to find out what was wrong, so I decided to close the issue (not delete it, just close it), because I am working on a company and I don't want to be seen as not doing anything all day.

Guess what?

There isn't a button for this, or there is one but really hard to find.

I just want to close the issue, but see it when I look at closed issues.

That is not the only problem I had, the issues page is so bad, I can't easily read the issues, I can't paste an image directly on text when creating an issue. I can't find any way other than finishing the issue, in bitbucket we have invalid-wontfix-duplicate etc choices. The UX is so bad.

I can't use Jira on WSL.

I will propose to not use Jira, it is pain in the neck.

Thanks.

Welcome to the community Şahin,

I am sorry that you're struggling with this stuff.  I have always said that Jira can look complex and there are a lot of things on-screen making it difficult to find what you're looking for until you've used it for a bit and got used to where things are.  I do not think there is any real way to fix this though, as the flexibility it provides demands that a lot is put in front of us.

To have a swipe at some of what you have reported:

  • To close an issue, change its status.  It's a simple transition to closed.  But, closed/done can be complex in Jira and it is possible that an admin has not got it quite right, and it may be possible to have issues that look closed and open at the same time.  This is something to take up with your admins.
  • The issues page focuses on what Atlassian think is important to the developer (person doing something about the issue).  I find it easily readable most of the time, but mainly on systems that are set up to keep it simple.  Summary, description and a the other 3-4 important fields.  And I can click stuff if I need to see more detail.  I worry when I see Jira systems configured to throw everything at you, or when they are preferentially showing stuff the managers think you want to see.  Again, the view is something to talk to your admins about.
  • I seem to be able to paste images, so I'm a bit stuck on replicating your block - could you give us a description of the exact response you get when you try?
  • You say that you have invalid-wontfix-duplicate-etc - these are Jira "resolutions" and again, your admins control the available list.  If your current options are not right, ask your admins.
  • I can't help you with "WSL" - not sure how a water soluble liquid applies to Jira?

I'm with you on Jira being a pain in the neck, but it always reminds me of what Churchill quoted about democracy (I know he repeated it, but I do not know where he got it from):    "... Jira is the worst form of issue-tracking except for all those other forms that have been tried ...".

Instead of just yelling "it does not work for me", it might be better to give your admins and Atlassian constructive criticism.
