Why does the Edit Dialog Exist as it is not considered a transition

I'm curious as why the Edit Dialog Box exists in its current form as it isn't considered a transition making it hard to do any manipulations on user input if needed. I understand that we can just create other Transitions that we would push users to use instead but I feel like the fact that and Edit button is always there can and will always lead to a user incorrectly selecting it to edit the issue in place of using another transition.

For example, what if I wanted to let the user update the issue without transitioning status but I also want to update other values of custom fields such as summary when they make said edits. From what I've seen so far the Edit Dialog Box won't allow me to use post functions or other methods to do so. I know you can make a transition that doesn't change the status but I still feel like people will gravitate to the edit button

This is just a curiosity question. I am using and older version of Jira due to constraints so I'm aware some of the problems I'm having are handled in the newer releases.

Welcome to the Atlassian Community!

Because you need a way to edit an issue without changing its status.

Transitions are not for editing, they are for changing status.
