Why can't I put in an Epic Link when I'm creating a new Issue?

I have a new next-gen project and noticed that you cannot add an Epic Link when you are creating a new issue. It does not appear at all (see screenshot below) Has anyone figured out how to solve this?

Hey Stephanie - Welcome to the Atlassian Community!!

To link a Next-gen card to an Epic:

Click into the card.

Then click the ellipsis menu (3 dots) and choose Add parent.

At that point you select the Epic. 

I don't believe there is a way to do it when creating - it's kind of after the fact.

In NG Epic Links don't really exist (as yet anyway).
