Why am I unable to bulk delete issues?

Jonny McAlister January 3, 2023

I'm trying to do a bulk delete of subtasks, however I'm unable to complete it.

I'm able to choose issues, choose operation (Delete Issues), proceed to Operation Details , however when clicking Next here, the page simply goes back to the Choose Operation step without any error message.

The screenshots below show the process:

Any idea why it's not working, or how I can figure out why?

I'm an Administrator on the project, so I think I should have permissions, as a Power User on this project is able to bulk delete without any issue.

Thanks!

Hi @Jonny McAlister , here are some questions for you. Are all issues in the same project? Do you have Delete permissions? Can you manually delete a single issue?

Jonny McAlister January 3, 2023

Yes all issues are in the same project.
I'm able to manually delete individual issues, yes, so I assume I have relevant delete permissions.

Hi @Jonny McAlister ,

thanks. It might be be interesting to see if you can bulk edit , e.g. add comment. I am mobile at the moment so it is difficult for me to test. Is this CMP or TMP?

Actually, just a quick test on one of my CMP projects and I was able to bulk delete just fine. One other idea to try, see if you can break the operation into multiple parts. Maybe there is one or more issues preventing the operation for some reason.

I tried a bulk edit to details on the sub-tasks and I got through to the Confirmation step, and then this error, so maybe this permission is needed for Delete too?

Yes. I suspect that you do not have permissions to make bulks changes. This is configured under admin > system > global permissions. Your Jira admin must change this.

Thanks for all the help, Jack.
I got this sorted with our Jira admin, I just needed the Bulk Change permission added.

Hi @Jonny McAlister ,

  • please check if you have the "Delete issue" permission for all the projects of the issues in your Query. (It's a specific permission so this might not necessarily be okay by being admin)
    • You can troubleshoot by manually deleting 1 sub-task, does this work?
  • What is your filter query? Do you only have subtasks as a result, or is it a mix of normal tasks and subtasks? I have seen bug reports on jira.atlassian.com where deletes go wrong if the query has tasks and subtasks because of the order of deletion.

I assume I do have the delete issue permission, as I'm able to manually delete issues without problem. These issues are all in the same project too, so there's no crossover.

Sorry, I don't have JQL to show you, as I'm trying to delete sub-tasks of a parent (user story), so these issues are all of the same type. They're actually just duplicated sub-tasks created by mistake by our automation rule, so it would be great if I could bulk delete these instead of doing it 1-by-1.
