Why am I having trouble customizing "status" in a company-managed board?

I am looking to customize the "to-do", "in progress" and "done" status sections in my company-managed board. Under "customize cards" under "More.." - it appears that status is greyed out and disables me from clicking it and I therefore can not customize the wording.

What is the reason for this? I would like to create different dispositions.

You cannot customize the Status values that are available through the Customize Cards feature. That feature is for you to select which fields you want to show on the cards, not for making customizations for the the values available in fields.

Customizing the Status values that are available for issues in a Company Managed project is something that generally can be done only by a Jira Administrator. There are some special circumstances under which a Project Administrator for the project who is also a Board Administrator for the board may be able to customize the available statuses. If you have those permissions you can find out your project/board match the other restrictions applied to that option by going to the Configure Board > Columns setting.

If the Workflow Type is "simplified" and you have the required permissions then you can add new Status values and reuse Status values that your Jira Admins have created. You can't change the name of an existing Status value.
