Why Jira software UI is different in cloud comparing to server?

Constantinos Lempidakis August 8, 2020

I've just installed v8.11.0 of Jira software in self-hosted server and I see that the UI is different comparing to the UI of the latest Jira Software on the cloud... Is any reason for this?Jira software cloud.pngJira software server.png

Hi @Constantinos Lempidakis

Originally, it was because Jira Cloud was ahead of the Server products - so it received new updates and enhancements prior to Server. It was also easier to roll-out and test modifications on Cloud as Atlassian hosts all of these instances, unlike Server where updates need to be manually applied by each customer.

However, these days it's also because Jira Cloud and Jira Server/Data Center are treated as separate products. There are unique features on either platform which might never be released on the other - including potentially, UI updates.

A few other examples are:

  • Automation: Automation for Jira is built-in to Jira Cloud, whilst it remains a separate app to purchase from the Marketplace for Server/DC
  • Advanced Roadmaps (used to be Jira Portfolio): This is still an app in Server/DC - but for Cloud it is only available with a subscription to Jira Cloud Premium

See a more expansive list on this page.
