Where do I find tickets moved to the Kanban backlog parking lot?

Moved tickets from the "To Do" list to the "Parking Lot" option on the Kanban backlog. Once moving tickets to the parking lot they disappeared from the backlog list.

I want to know where I can find the "parking lot" to view these tickets and if there is a way to split the backlog for a Kanban board into the "To Prioritize" and "Parking Lot" options.

Hi @Jackie Bacon

When you say moving the tickets from "To Do" to "Parking Lot" - is this a change in status? The below answer is targeted towards "status" although could also be used with other fields (eg. Components).

If yes, there are two possibilities I can think of:

Backlog:

To confirm:

  • The Backlog is a separate screen to the main board - if you open the left-hand project panel (using the small arrow in the upper-left corner), you'll see the "Backlog" option.
  • The Backlog is the bottom list. The top list is the first column's status on your Kanban Board, named after the column.
  • See more on the Kanban Backlog on this page.

It might be that the issues are there (depending on the filter) and just mixed in, especially if you have multiple statuses in the Backlog list. You could visualise the status on the cards to make it easier to see them - for example:

  1. Go to Options (3-dots icon in upper-right corner) > Board Settings > Card Layout
  2. Under "Backlog", select to include the field "Status"

Filter:

The status "Parking Lot" is filtered off your board, meaning these do not appear when moved to this status. To check this:

  1. Press Options > Board Settings > General
  2. Under Filter Query, check for any "status not in" or "status !=" queries which mention "Parking Lot"
  3. If you want to rectify this, press "Edit Filter Query" under the Saved Filters section
  4. Update the Filter, press Search and then Save and return to the board

---------------------

In regards to splitting up the Kanban Backlog, this isn't possible at this stage. You could use the trick above to visualise the status on each card - or use quick filters. Quick Filters let you filter on the board to show a specific set of the overall data - so you could:

  1. Go to Options > Board Settings > Quick Filters
  2. Add a filter such as "Parking Lot" and enter the JQL status = "Parking Lot"
  3. Press Add

When you return to the board you'll then be able to press the Quick Filter from along the top to filter the board (on either view) to show just issues in the "Parking Lot" status.

The other alternative is to:

  1. Create 2 Kanban Boards
  2. Set the first board to have your Backlog Columns - such as "Parking Lot" and "To Prioritise"
  3. Make the last column on your first board to be the first column on your second (which will pass issues between them)
  4. Set your second board to have your delivery workflow. Remember the first column's status should match the one used in the last column from the first.

It is two boards but it's a common workaround when talking Backlog Refinement vs Delivery.

---------------------

Let us know if this resolves your issue - or if it's not a status, let us know what the "Parking Lot" is :)

The issue for me was having the "Parking Lot" status filtered out. After updating the filter query to include that status I saw the tickets I was looking for. Thank you!
