Where are the items from my backlog?

I'm putting stories in my Backlog, but I don't see those stories anywhere else I would expect to. For example, if I go to Timeline and start an Epic, it makes me create new stories instead of being able to add the existing ones from the backlog. Why would I ever put stories or tasks in the backlog if I have to recreate them anyways?

Another spot that doesn't make sense is on the board. It says 'add items to your backlog to get started', and again, I have stories on my backlog, so why is it saying that and why can't I chose stories from my backlog to put on my board?

Hi @Keith Murray

Welcome to the community.

Hi adding Stories to an Epic need to be done from the story level, as Epic Link or Parent field is on that level.

In your backlog, via the view settings option you are able to activate the Epic's panel now you are able to drag and drop a story to an Epic and they will be linked as well.

Is your board a kanban a scrum board (name active sprints)? Then you would need to create a sprint first, add items to the sprint and start the sprint.

I hope these pointers will move you forward.

This kind of helped, so thank you. Opening the 'Epic' panel on my backlog page allows me to drag stories I've been adding to an Epic, so that's fine. Still weird that when I go to the 'Timeline' page that I don't have visibility of my backlog to drag and drop on that page as well.

Hi @Keith Murray

I know but this is the setup, as the time line view is more for progress and to occasionally add new things.

But best practice is to to work from the backlog, as this is where you upcoming work is, based on rank.

Hi @Keith Murray and welcome to the Community!  Can we get a bit more information?

  • Is this a team-managed project or a company-managed project?
  • Do you have a board filter attached to the board?
  • Do you have any filters selected that would limit what you see in your backlog?
