When/How do filters become advanced?

When adding several fields the search filter becomes "advanced" and moves to script. At what point does this shift happen? Is this configurable? It is much harder to train people in reading script than just adding

Molly, general rule of thumb is that if you need to do anything more complicated than that which can be added by one of the drop down, it will be advanced.  

I usually train my users on the drop-down and then show them what it looks like in advanced mode and how to toggle back so they aren't suprised if they see it.

Thanks Peter. There is some point when it becomes advanced that you actually can't even go back to see what the search looks like with drop downs anymore. I am going to experiment, but do you happen to know at what point that happens?
