What's the best way to organize the items in your backlog?

Besides putting them in order is there a way you can separate items on Hold or items for the next PI within your backlog?

If you are using sprints, which I assume you are, I once created a fake sprint and placed it right above the backlog. For my purposes, I was looking to separate items that were ready for refinement, but for yours, you could call the fake sprint "Next PI" or something like that. :)
