What is the process the Anonymous user uses to access the JIRA system?

Jim D June 7, 2018

Hi,

I have searched for "Anonymous" but all I find is is how to set up your system to allow

Anonymous access.

I am the Anonymous user.  I have a URL that shows me a dashboard and requests login information.

What are the steps that an Anonymous user users to view the data in JIRA?

Is there a visual clue that informs me that Anonymous access is allowed?

Regards,

Jim

HI @Jim D

Welcome to the community!

If you see the projects & create a button on the jira header beside to Dashboard then you have the anonymous access to browse the project and create the issue for that specific project.

here is the detail documentation for anonymous access to jira.

For restrict the anonymous access to user make sure you should not add the Anyone group into your permission scheme for any project.

Thank you for your response.  I don't see the projects or create button. So I can conclude that the JIRA implementation does not allow anonymous access.

Jim

I am sorry to be blunt, but your conclusion is completely wrong.

When a user visits Jira, they are offered the option to log in.

If they do (which requires them to have an account), then Jira knows who they are, and hence they are not anonymous.

If they do not log in, then Jira does not know them and hence treats them as anonymous.

An anonymous user will always be able to see the system dashboard (although that may well show them nothing more than the login prompt) and some pages about not having any access because they are not logged in.

If you grant the group "anyone" access to a project, then the anonymous users will then be able to see it.  So Jira absolutely does allow anonymous access.

In your comment, you also say "I don't see the projects or create button" - that sounds like you are not logged in, and anonymous users have not yet been granted any access.  You'll need to log in as an admin and change the settings to allow it.  (A note of caution - the point of an issue tracker is to track things, and who does what is a huge, and often mandatory, part of that.  I would only allow anonymous access to read-only functions, and create issue in an access-request project if appropriate)

Thank You for your clarification.  You have confirmed that no projects were set up in this JIRA implementation with "anyone" access.  If this had been done then I would have a "project picker" available on the screen without logging in.

Yep, if one or more projects had been allowed "browse project: Group (anyone)", then you would see a "projects" dropdown after "Dashboards" in the top bar.

Jim,

The project owner must allow users to browse and search issues without logging in or allow users to create issues without logging in. The link below should help.
