Hello All,
I have 2 questions:
1. What is the limitation (if any) for a cloud domain in regards of project count before the site will start to work slow?

2. Same question but for work-items count, what is the limit for work-items in a project before the project will start to work slow?

Thanks.

Ariel.

Hi @arielei ,

There isn't a real limit about number of projects and work item, but Atlassian gives the following recommendations:

Guardrails and best practices

We recommend following these guardrails for easier data management and configuration.

The guardrails are:

  • Work items: 18,000,000 work items per site

  • Projects: 8,400 projects per site

https://support.atlassian.com/jira-cloud-administration/docs/data-limits-and-guardrails/

There is a ne feature to maintain the site, Site optimizer:https://support.atlassian.com/jira-cloud-administration/docs/what-is-the-site-optimizer/

Kind regards

Hi @arielei,

There aren’t hard “it gets slow at X” thresholds for Jira Cloud. Atlassian publishes guardrails and a few UI/view limits that are the best way to think about this. You can find them here https://support.atlassian.com/jira-cloud-administration/docs/data-limits-and-guardrails/

See extract below:

Guardrails are recommended data thresholds. If you exceed them, your site’s performance may be affected. These are best practices, not mandatory.

We recommend following these guardrails for easier data management and configuration.

The guardrails are:

  • Work items: 18,000,000 work items per site

  • Projects: 8,400 projects per site

The real world slowness mostly comes when you try to render many work items at a time, and to prevent issues there is a limit of: Boards, backlogs, and the project timeline render up to 5,000 work items at a time - go above that and the UI truncates the view (i.e. you can never see more then 5000 at a time in a single board).

In my experience never I have see slowness / limitations due to having many projects or many issues on the instance. The real performance problems come from how many custom fields you have and how many work item types -> and this things atlassian actually limits:

  • Fields: Maximum 700 fields per project (50 for Team managed prjects)

  • Work types: Maximum 150 work types per project
