What do the colours on a board's roadmap mean?

are red, blue, or purple?  I've also seen yellow, black, and teal on my roadmap.  What do those mean?  Is there any way to change what they mean?

They're the Epic colors.  Go into the epics tickets themselves and click the colored box in the issue summary and you can select another one. 

They don't have specific meaning, they're just colors used for visual clarity
